The Ultimate Rooster Fish Fly Fishing Trip in Baja

rooster fish on the fly

Our recent trip to Baja Mexico was  nothing short of spectacular! Thanks to Mary Grigsby at The Fish Ranch, we experienced an unforgettable trip hosted by Steve Bechard of Rise Fishing. The accommodations were top-notch, the food was exceptional, and the fishing was phenomenal.

We stayed in a beautiful beachfront house, where each angler had their own private room. Our days started early with a delicious breakfast, ensuring we were ready to hit the water for the prime morning bite. Some boats picked us up right in front of the house, while others shuttled about 25 minutes to the boat ramp. Regardless of the starting point, every angler caught fish daily.

Fishing Highlights: The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the Rooster Fish. Several were landed, including three "Grande" Roosters, with two weighing well over 60lbs. Unfortunately, eight other giants managed to get away, either breaking the line or shaking the hook. For those who haven't experienced fishing for Roosters, their power and speed are truly breathtaking!

Two particularly memorable catches were made using Rise Fishing Co. 10wt fly rods. Oliver Ancans from Alaska hooked a massive Rooster on our Level 10wt. Initially unaware of its size, Oliver soon realized he was hooked to a big rooster as the fight ensued. Using the butt of his rod, he managed to bring the fish to the boat in 35-40 minutes. Steve Bechard, fishing with John Wilson from Cortland Line, had a similar experience. Steve hooked a huge Rooster on the Shearwater 10wt, and after an epic battle involving seven long runs and an almost two-mile chase, they landed the fish an hour later. This Rooster was estimated to be 56-60 inches long which would put its weight around 75-80lbs!

In addition to the giants, we caught numerous medium-sized Roosters (10-20lbs) and plenty of smaller ones (2-8lbs), which provided thrilling fights with their speed and agility. We also caught in Jack Crevalle, Mahi, Grouper, Pompano, Amberjacks, and many other species. The Jacks, in particular, were a blast to catch with their hard hits and aggressive behavior. The Jacks averaged 15-25lbs with a couple larger.

Culinary Delights: Each evening was a culinary  adventure. Chef Emilio wowed us with fantastic meals, including fresh ceviche and sashimi from our catch that we brought back. One night, we   enjoyed a delicious dinner from a local Mexican   hot dog stand, which was anything but ordinary. We also took some Mahi and Grouper to a bar and grill, where they prepared exquisite local dishes. Our final night was spent at Rancho Cacachilas, a 34,000-acre working ranch with stunning views of the Sea of Cortez. We enjoyed farm-to-table wood-fired pizzas and cocktails, with some of us even dressing the part!

Looking Ahead: The feedback from our group of seasoned anglers was unanimously positive, earning five-star reviews across the board. We have already secured the first two weeks of June for 2025. Don't miss your chance to join us on this extraordinary adventure! Spots are sure to fill up fast.
